The Olsztyn Gazette (1886–1939)

The Olsztyn Gazette (1886–1939)
The exhibition presents both the gazette's history, figures of its creators, problems discussed in the newspaper, and its readers – the people of Warmia. The above can be accomplished with the help of the gathered ethnographic exhibits: items of clothing, work tools, religious objects and photographs presenting the most characteristic sights of Warmia's rural landscape.
The exhibition is opened by the gazette's journalists' portrait gallery and family photographs of its last publisher and editor – Seweryn Pieniężny. The further part is devoted to the history of the publishing house and technical matters associated with printing the newspaper. Here you can see items of the print shop's equipment: the manual proof press, type-setter shelves, wire stitchers, casting apparatus for metal stereotypy, perforator. The presentation of the problems discussed in the newspaper simultaneously reveals the history of Polish Warmia, recorded in the articles of this period. Through the prism of press articles, the most important political, social, economic and cultural events of the region are presented: the fight against Germanization, the 1920 plebiscite, activity of Polish organizations, efforts to introduce a Polish member to the Prussian parliament, economic activity, struggle for Polish education, events bringing together the Polish population, contacts with Poland.
At the exhibition you can often see unique copies of the newspaper such as, for instance, the first and last issue of the Olsztyn Gazette. There is one memento which is exceptionally valuable, after the complete destruction of the publishing house by the Germans – several dozen printing fonts.
